Amanda Latona is a recording artist-turned-IFBB Bikini Pro and fitness model. Amanda landed her first record deal at the age of 18 in an all-girl group that performed and toured throughout Europe and the United States. Along with that record deal came a gym membership, and the day she set foot in a gym, she was hooked. Soon Amanda decided to take her love of being onstage and fuse it with her other passion, fitness, and compete. Amanda entered her first show in 2003 and won.

In 2007, after a move to Las Vegas, Amanda won two regional titles as well as 1st place in the Model America Championships, and a top-10 placing at the first-ever FLEX Bikini Model Search. The following year, Amanda went on to win the Model America Championships for the second year in a row and a 4th-place finish in the FLEX Bikini Model Search, which opened the door to a six-page spread and article in Muscle & Fitness magazine.

In 2009, Amanda decided to try her hand as a competitor in the newly-created NPC Bikini Division. Winning every show she entered in 2009, Amanda won her IFBB pro card at the USAs in July. She then went on to enter the FLEX Bikini Model Search for the third time at the Olympia, this time beating out nearly 100 competitors for the title and landing a coveted contract with Weider Publications.

Her pro debut came in March 2010 at the IFBB MuscleContest Pro Bikini Championship in Culver City, CA, where she earned third place and thus qualified for the inaugural Bikini Olympia in September. She followed up the strong debut with her first win as a pro at the 2010 Europa SuperShow in Dallas, TX.

Amanda currently resides in Las Vegas and works full-time as a fitness model, print/commercial model and TV host. Of her relationship with BSN®, Amanda has this to say: "I have been using BSN®'s products for years. It was the company I dreamed of being signed to. I don't think I've ever had a workout without using N.O.-XPLODE™, seriously. I feel privileged to represent such a prestigious company that I truly believe in."

A little about me
I was born in Cabrera, Dominican Republic and raised in San Juan Puerto Rico along with my two older brothers. I was a tomboy, always playing with the boys and getting beat on by them. My brothers and I had some fun putting forks in electrical outlets to see if we could see our skeletons (we were crazy like that).

I was an active child while I was living in the Dominican Republic. I remember wanting to take gymnastics classes, but our financial situation would not allow it and the gymnastics studio was a road trip in itself. So I would try cartwheels and back-walkovers at home and kept myself busy playing games with my two brothers. I have broken my forehead, nose and the list goes on. We had fun!!!

Once we moved to Puerto Rico, I started to play volleyball, a little softball and basketball. At the age of 17, I was introduced to weight training. I remember walking around school with my weight-training belt hanging on my shoulder just so people would see that I worked out. I did not work my upper body that much but I lifted with my legs a lot which increased my quad size dramatically. After moving, my workouts became more sporadic but I kept working out. In college I joined the Army’s ROTC program, which in turn added running to my training. After being in the ROTC for a couple of years, I decided to take a trip throughout the states to learn English. I traveled to New York from California. While I was in California, I remember a couple of people suggesting that I try to compete in a fitness show. I was very skeptical since I did not have any type of dance background to compete. I did not have the mind-set to even think that I could compete in a fitness show. I remember looking at Mia Finnegan's abs in a magazine and I wanted my abs to look like hers.

I moved back to Puerto Rico and in 1995 I started teaching aerobics classes and doing personal training at the gym on a military base. It was there where I saw a poster for the NPC Armed Forces Fitness Championships in North Carolina. I put a routine together and went to North Carolina to compete in my first fitness show. It was an awesome experience! I remember looking at all the girls and I was so amazed by them. I ended up placing second and after that I was hooked.

I decided to try the 1995 Nationals in Chicago. I made the top 35 out of 75 girls. This was the first national show and the IFBB was giving 10 pro cards. Dale Tomita won the show and she was amazing. Once in Illinois, I registered for college and continued my fitness career as well. I did two shows in 1996 and then decided to take 1997 off to work on my physique and routine. I came back in 1998 and realized that the competition was stronger. In search of a pro card, I decided to do all the national shows. I transformed my
body to a point that I knew I could compete with the other girls, but I knew that my routine had to be stronger in order to win a pro card.

At one of my shows in 1996 I remember meeting an IFBB pro Maria Bellando. Her routine was very impressive, so I asked her about her routine. She introduced me to her choreographer, Kevin Creegan, out of Miami. I decided to go and see Kevin and have him choreograph a routine that I could use for the 1999 USA Nationals. Maria and her husband were very kind and let my husband and me stay at her house in Miami while meeting with Kevin. Meeting with Kevin was one of the best decisions I made for my fitness career. Kevin choreographed a routine that was my style. He worked with my strongest points, which made me feel really comfortable on stage.
I went to the USA’s feeling more confident than ever because my routines were stronger and more exciting. I was excited to do my routine for the first time in my career. To my surprise, I won the overall at the 1999 USA Fitness Championship and earned my IFBB pro card. I never thought I was going to win my class, let alone the overall title. I went in to this contest ready. I still can't believe I won!

In my first year as a professional, I was invited to compete in the Ms. Fitness International. It was such an honor to be on that stage at the 2000 Arnold Classic. I was so excited to be there with the other professional athletes. That was my pro debut and I finished 8th. It was a wonderful experience. My goal was to qualify for the 2000 Fitness Olympia and I did by placing second at the Jan Tana Classic. The Fitness Olympia was a dream comes true. I was so thrilled to be there and to place 5th and qualify for the 2001 Olympia was a blessing in itself.

Since turning pro, I have worked on becoming the best I can be by improving my routine and physique. Becoming a professional fitness competitor has been a blessing for me. I love competing!! I love teaching others about the benefits of living a healthy life style. I also enjoy training girls for contests and seeing how they evolve on a personal level. I have been blessed with the opportunity of doing what I love to do, and that is competing. I believe that our limitations in life are the limits we set upon ourselves. You can do anything you want in life if you have the desire to do it!

Katie Noval

As I have been in preparation for the WBFF World Championships, I have met many amazing people. Male and female. I have mentioned many times that this organization is more like a giant family than just a group of self absorbed competitors only interested in what they can gain for themselves. If you go online, whether it be Facebook or Myspace or Muscle-ink or any of the many online sites, you will find WBFF competitors congratulating or supporting eachother. I love that about the WBFF.
I could easily write a blog about each and every competitor in the WBFF. We all have our own stories, backgrounds and lives that I’m sure people would find interesting. That being said, there IS one competitor that I would like to bring just a little attention to. He name is Katie Noval. What really makes this competitor stand out to me is all that she has accomplished in such a short period of time. We have SO MANY beautiful and interesting competitors in the WBFF, so for someone to really stand out is a difficult task. Where I first noticed Katie was online. No, she wasn’t promoting herself. S he doesn’t have a webpage. Her “fans” are probably just family and friends. Where I saw her was on just about every WBFF competitors facebook page commenting. Telling someone to have a good day, pushing someone to have a great workout, coaxing someone to get to the gym even though they wrote that they didn’t feel like it. Making the women feel beautiful and the men feel important. Yet doing so with an innocence that is true and real.

I guess it would be easy for those who “WIN” to say how great an organization is. However, when someone diets and trains 7 days a week, 365 days a year for a show and in the midst of SO many competitors, doesn’t quite place where they may have liked, sometimes that person makes the decison to stop. Sometimes they jump to other organizations. Sometimes they make excuses, or nitpick the people who placed above them. Not Katie. She goes on and on about every competitor in the WBFF. She truely LOVES the sport, and first or last, is one of the most amazing representatives I have ever seen in an organization. She has a maturity and an outlook that EVERYONE that competes should be lucky enough to have. Did I mention that she is only 22 years old? Take a look at the quality of her physique and read that again! She is 22 years old! In SUCH a short period of time, she has obtained a physique that rivals even the most seasoned in the sport!

Katie credits her physique to her trainer Nathan Harewood who trains at The Athlete Factory in Calgary. He trains a group of competitors there who have formed almost a family. Pushing, encouraging and driving eachother to be the absolute BEST that they can be. Helping one another to achieve their individual potential. Nathan is also currently working with new WBFF Pro and Legend, Monica Brant, who Katie claims is her “Idol” and she says she cannot wait to train with her in the few weeks leading up to the World Championships.

Competing a few times in the WBFF, Katie has improved her placing each time. Last year she placed in the top ten in Alberta, and placed fifth in bikini and sixth in fitness model this year, where she caught the attention of photographer David Ford who displayed her in STATUS Magazine. Now she is hoping to continue improving on her placing and hopefully achieving professional status as she trains harder than ever for the World Championships in Missassauga on September 18th. Training at The Athlete Factory and also at Pro Bodies in Calgary. A no frills, no ammenity hardcore gym. How hardcore? They have the FIRST calf machine that was designed. However does the equipment work? Look at Katies physique. That should answer your question. How hard does she train? Very few females of Katies stature are going to get the respect of the powerlifting crew, who have proudly taken her under their wings to support and push her.

On the Deans list for years at the University of Calgary, and finishing her last semester, she is planning to apply to Law School soon, and what does this dedicated competitor do for fun at 22 years old? Well, while most others her age are going to parties, dating, drinking, doing drugs, etc etc. Katie, when not training, is a certified snowboard coach, practices Muy Thai, and… the part that just may capture the hearts of guys everywhere? She is into comic books, watches UFC, and LOVES her playstation. Games of choice? Call of Duty, God of War, UFC, etc. She calls herself a “closet nerd”.

Katies love for the sport and infectious personality has reinspired me as I am prearing myself for the Worlds. And I would like her to know that as much as she supports and drives all of us, that everyone who has been lucky enough to have come in contact with her, also wishes her the very best of luck.

Carmen Knights

1. Hi Carmen, at first, could you please give us a short introduction of yourself and your backrounds?

- Although I was very athletic and competitive in various sports at school, I had my children at a relatively young age and dedicated my time to raising them. I did not undertake any sporting activities at all from school until the age of 28. I was a full time single Mum, but at 28 joined the local gym and started..well I just kind of ran and messed around a little with the machines not knowing what I was doing at all.

2. I gotta admit, first time I really paid more attention to you was actually in this fall when your 2 weeks out photos came online. But before that, I guess you have some kind of history in competing. Could you share with us start of your competing career?

- My first show was in September 2003, a ’guy’ down the gym (Eddie Abbew no less!), asked if I had considered competing - I didn’t know what he actually meant! He had been asked to monitor a girl who had been dieting for a show and thought that in TWO WEEKS he could make me look good enough to challenge this particular girl at the contest. At this point I had never trained legs and had pretty much just messed around in the gym. I agreed and Eddie took me through a few workouts and a very stringent diet. It was the first year of body fitness in the UK. Admittedly I was shocked at how my body had transformed but I saw the stage and wanted to run away - stage fright was an understatement. I said I wanted to go home because the other girl was prettier than me! I shook on stage and looked like I had been forced to do it!!
The following year I only returned to the stage to see if I could actually stand on it confidently and although it took a couple of drinks, I was not as bad as the previous year! I then placed third at the British Finals, I did another qualifier and then had nearly a whole year before the British Championships 2005 where I earned my pro card. It’s the only show I have ever won and I was British Champion! Two weeks out from this show I was lean and shredded, we SO VERY NEARLY switched to body building, I actually weighed more than the heavy weight woman who won, but my head was fixed on body fitness(figure), so two weeks out I was eating burgers and peanut butter to smooth out, I was big on stage, but not conditioned, I did not think I could win as I liked how I looked two weeks earlier!.

3. So you started with figure and later turned pro in figure. How would describe your figure career and it’s highlights? Where you satisfied with the results you achieved?

- My highlights would have to be winning the British Championships, I was really shocked I had won and in fact covered my face in disbelief. It was hard to comprehend that someone who was born and spent her younger years in a very quiet/countryside part of the UK had won such a major contest, beating eighteen other competitors!

Carmen Knights
4. By the way, Am I right that 2007 Jan Tana Pro figure was your last figure show? After that, you kept kinda long pause in competing, why?

- Jan Tana was indeed my last Pro Figure contest. After this show I concentrated more on my personal training and searching for new clients whilst still in training of course. Unfortunately in January 2008, I had a very silly non training related accident. I fractured my forearm bone (the ulna) and had my right arm in a full cast for nine weeks….. I still trained quads and hamstrings but upper body training was completely non existent for approximately four months. It then took two months of training very lightly. The arm did cause a lot of problems. My right arm had always been stronger and once healed became super strong! I have to concentrate extremely hard on not letting the right side over compensate during my workouts.

5. Then in the end of this summer, I heard some rumours you are making a crossover and compete in pro bodybuilding, which you actually did at Tampa Pro. What is the story behind this decision to switch from figure to bodybuilding?

- The decision was made soon after the Jan Tana. It was the first time I stood on stage - without alcohol ,felt happy and a hundred per cent confident with how I looked. I still made silly mistakes regarding costume colours and hair etc, but I was actually happy with my physique and my condition. It was stated in an online magazine that I was the most muscular competitor on stage. I was happy with that comment but it was not the requirement for figure. Whilst I understand and respect the figure ranks, I did not want to have to loose the muscle I had trained hard for. I enjoy training hard immensely and well…..there was only one way to go.

Carmen Knights
6. So, for your first bodybuilding show, how did your prep changed compared to the ones you had in figure? Or did it?

- Oh yes, it did change immensely! Whilst my arm was in a cast, my training was limited and I found myself senselessly eating junk food. This meant that even though I had grown new muscle, a considerable amount of fat had come along for the ride! I was on the ketosis diet for fourteen weeks for my first body building show and my cardio was increased to three hours on certain days. I had to work extremely hard to shed that unwanted fat therefore I shall not get that fat ever again. It is not productive in body building!

7. What kind of expectations you had concerning your first pro bodybuilding show and generally, how did it feel?

- I had absolutely no expectations whatsoever especially because it was my first ever bodybuilding contest and I was going to compete against seasoned athletes who have been bodybuilding for years. Until I saw the pictures taken at two weeks out, I feared I would look like a figure girl on stage amongst bodybuilders. I train with three men, two are one hundred and thirty kilos plus so I always feel like the little one! Again I was happy with how I looked, I thoroughly enjoyed my time on stage, maybe because it was my first show I didn’t put any pressure on myself I saw it as a learning experience.

8. What about the contest itself and your experiences there, could you please share you’re your thoughts about your very first pro bodybuilding contest?

- I have seen a lot of shows with my training partner and coach Eddie Abbew who is also an IFBB pro, but I have to say I was very impressed with it. Tim Gardner really looked after the athletes. Everything ran smoothly and everything seemed taken care of. I found the competitors very friendly and did not feel out of place at all. All in all I enjoyed the whole experience and I am extremely excited about the next one. I would have to stress that it is a lot harder to compete abroad. The long haul flight to the States on low carbohydrates was quite an ordeal but once I got there, settled in the hotel and found the foods that I needed, things were not so bad.

Carmen Knights
9. All in all, I would say it was a successful crossover from figure to bodybuilding. What would you say to the figure girls who are frustrated with judging criteria in figure and are planning crossover but still doubt?

- I think you have to be realistic. Have a good look at the ladies doing well to see what the judges require. I understand the frustrations but I also understand why figure is what it is. It is a very marketable look and for the average person it can be achievable. If you enjoy being extremely lean and continue competing in figure, then stick with figure but accept that you most likely are not going to place well. If you enjoy training hard and the challenge of improving your physique with each show, maybe consider bodybuilding.

10. Anyway, you placed 9th, were you satisfied with the placing and even more important, were you satisfied with your own package you presented?

- I was ecstatic!!! After pre judging I thought I had placed out of the top ten so proceeded to eat and drink lots of everything. When Carla Salotti (the back stage usher) called my number for the top ten, she said, ’You are the only person to ever look disappointed at placing top 10’! I was not disappointed but truly shocked. I had started getting dressed!!
Both Eddie and I were competing in the same show and whilst it worked at home dieting, it did not work in the final week or two. We were both unable to give each other the help we required. He has said that my final stages of prep shall be completely different next time. I shall also have a lot more posing practice as this was not polished at all.

Carmen Knights
11. Talking about your package at Tampa, what improvements do you think you need to make physique wise?

- I think my back and hamstrings need to improve dramatically. Those areas are my main focus at the moment but in general I would say I am working on everything! The other area that needs improvement is my presentation because even though I have been competing for a few years, that was the first time I had to pose as a bodybuilder. In figure contests we just do quarter turns.

12. They say improvements always require dedication. What does the word ”dedication” mean to you?

- I would say in relation to body building , the word dedication means continuing to have a passion for what you are doing. It is denying yourself some of the pleasures in life in order to achieve your goal. I have to eat the same foods at the same times everyday. I don’t go out much. I try to get as much rest as I can in order to grow. I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. It is believing in yourself even when family and friends who do not understand the sport are against you.

Carmen Knights
13. We talked about your contest history, but how are you doing today in life generally? Whats going on in your life?

- At the moment I am in the process of setting up advertising to improve my personal client base. My website will be updated soon and apart from running a constant taxi service for my two teenage children, everything else is pretty much dictated by my training and eating!.

14. I guess most of the readers are interested in your next show. When and what shows are you planning to do next and with what kind of goals?

- I am hoping to compete in the New York Pro and possibly Tampa or the Europa show. My focus is to always look better than my previous contest.

Carmen Knights
15. And what about your long term plans in bodybuilding, have you made some?

- I have not really made any long term plans. One never knows what is around the corner so for now, I shall just focus what I am doing now. I have learnt a great deal about diet, nutrition and training and about my own body. I would like to use this information to help people who want to lose weight, tone up or take up bodybuilding and figure competitively.

16. So you have your next goal in your mind, could you share us a bit of your plans from now to the show day training and nutrition wise?

- My training will continue as it is. Training with Eddie Abbew, we never complete the same workout twice. He is constantly changing things around. Training with men, there are no easy days! My off season diet is a lot cleaner than it ever has been before, as I know this is a major factor in order for me to grow. I train hamstrings twice a week. I include pull ups or chins in every back workout in order to improve on my back width. I hope all that will pay off in the end.

17. What else we can expect from you in the near future? For example any guest posings, shootings etc coming up?

- I have not any guest posing planned but I am going to use the winter months to my advantage to gain a little off season weight and hope that you will notice the changes the next time I am on stage. When I am a few weeks out from my next show, I hope to arrange a few shoots here in the UK and a few after my show in America.
18. I am sure whole bodybuilding world is looking forward to see and hear more of you! For those, where they can find more news and information about you?

- More about me can be found on my website CarmenKnights.Com (due to be relaunced in the near future), I can also be found on facebook : Carmen Marie Knights .

19. And now you get a chance to thank the persons who have most helped you during your career.

- I have to thank the guy who spotted my fat backside doing everything wrong in the gym, Mr Eddie Abbew, he was the only person to believe in me and to make me believe in myself. I never dreamed I would be capable of getting on stage let alone competing as a professional.
I would also like to thank CNP Nutrition and Fitness Addicts, my sponsors.
Thank you to my children for putting up with me doing what I do !

Kristy Hawkins

Age: 22
Height: 5'3"
Weight: 155 offseason; ~130 for competition (middleweight)

Contest history: I've competed in several local shows beginning at age 17. Last year, I began competing in the NPC and won the lightweight division at the Michigan Championships and placed 3rd at the Pittsburgh Open. In 2003, I won the middleweight division at the Ronnie Coleman Classic and the middleweight and overall at the Pittsburgh Open.

Future plans: Jr. Nationals

Education: I graduated from Texas A&M University in Dec 2002 with a B.S. in chemical engineering (suma cum laude and with honors). I am currently continuing my research at Texas A&M and taking graduate classes to allow me to focus on competing this year. In the fall, I will go to Caltech to pursue my PhD, also in chemical engineering. My research interests are in the area of directed evolution and protein engineering.

How I got into bodybuilding: I always struggled with my weight as an adolescent and naturally gravitated towards weight training when I was able to drive and pay for a gym membership at age 16. The owners saw my progress and dedication and convinced me to enter a competition they were hosting. They taught me all the basics of nutrition and contest prep and I was hooked. I continued competing at least once a year through college just as a hobby, but this past year, I have really taken it to the next level.

Precontest diet/training: I start preparing for a contest about 20 weeks out, increasing my training and cardio and watching my diet (although I'm still very strict in the offseason). This year, I have been lifting twice a day (training everything twice a week) and doing 2 hours of cardio except on leg days. My diet is high protein (2.5g/lb bodyweight), moderate fat, and zero carbs.

Kristy Hawkins (born August 28, 1980 in Longview, Texas) is an IFBB professional female bodybuilder from the United States.

Hawkins earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2002, graduating summa cum laude and with University and Foundation Honors. She read for her M.S. in Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2005. She is currently working towards a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, also at Caltech.

Hawkins is currently studying chemical engineering in the area of metabolic engineering in yeast with an emphasis on inducible promoter systems and other strategies for fine-tuning expression of recombinant enzymes / proteins. She is primarily working to produce benzylisoquinoline alkaloids in S. cerevisiae, but has also constructed yeast strains which exhibit modified responses from the GAL promoter and is pursuing other RNA-based strategies for regulation by small molecules in vivo.

Kristy enjoys reading (during cardio), cross-stitching, and hiking.

Jodie Minear

Hi my name is Jodie Minear, Im a IFBB pro figure competitor, skin care consultant, occasional personal trainer, and fitness model. I was born in a small town in Texas in 1982 and I was involved in many activities but my real passion was not found until I began working out. I would go to the gym and lift while all my friends were out having fun. I always wanted to be the best and I was obsessed with muscle and the idea of being able to build my body. Losing my best friend after college helped me see that life is short and everyday is a gift. In 2008 I completed in my first NPC show winning first in my class and overall in the figure division. Later that year I placed 4th in nationals. In 2009 after taking some time to change some things up I decided to do jr nationals and earned my pro card by winning first in my class. Just recently I completed in my first pro show in Phoenix and earned a 5th place medal. I have worked for many amazing companies and plan on going as far as I can in this industry. I love being in front of the camera and sharing my life with people, and hoping to inspire like so many have done for me. One day I hope to stand on the Olympia stage holding a trophy in my hand.

Gafner earned her pro card in 1990 by winning the middle weight class at the NPC Nationals. She competed as a professional from 1991 through 1993. She was the first winner of the Jan Tana Classic in 1991. [edit] BiographySue Gafner was born in 1964 in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. When she was young her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she grew up, and eventually moved to Southern California where she settled along with her family in Orange,California. At the age of 23 in January 1987, she was introduced to weight training through the book Hardbodies by Glady Portugues and began to lift at a local gym (Brainum, 166). She took up weight training mainly to lose weight. During this time weight training was becoming a more and more popular with women and soon Sue became very interested in it along with better nutritional practices. Her body responded quickly and before she knew it she got hooked on the bodybuilding life style. During this time she began following a stricter diet and soon began to think about competition. Gafner gathered her training knowledge from a variety of sources, including Hardbodies and received guidance from some of the members at her gym who offered her tips on training and dieting.

She finally decided to compete after three months of training when people at her him began suggesting that she should try competition. Sue decided to do so and on April 1987 she entered her first contest. She won her class at the 1987 Palm Springs Muscle Classic Novice contest, and followed her debut with a victory at the 1987 Tournament of Champions where she won both her class and overall. She continued training, but ran into trouble due to her lack of knowledge about dieting and exercise and often overtrained (Brainum, 223). This soon changed when Sue joined with a more experienced bodybuilder named Lisa Hitchens. Lisa taught Sue about how to train properly and this was very helpful for Sue and it showed in her competition. Gafner placed 1st in the light weight division at the 1988 USA Championships and 2nd on the 1989 NPC Nationals. She later decided to enter the middle weight class and placed 1st at the NPC Nationals, earning her Pro card in only a three year period. She continued to compete meanwhile she managed her own wall-papering business and worked as a wall-paper hanger.

After becoming a Pro Sue had a brief career in the pro circuit. She arrived at a time where Women's Bodybuilding was going through a transition where bigger was better. And like many women bodybuilders of the 80s she refused to follow with the trend of gaining large levels of muscle mass in order to compete and be successful in the sport were once small frames were considered better. And while she was very successful at the NPC level where she placed no lower than 2nd, she soon found herself lost at the IFBB were heavier athletes were winning the shows. She placed 10th at her first Ms. Olympia competition and 12th the second time and after reaching the top-five at her second 1993 Ms. International, she retired from the sport entirely. This came as a result of her lack of desire to use large amounts of steroids such as growth hormones in order to compete and be successful at a pro level. Today it is believed that like many other professional bodybuilders, Sue has started her own personal training business and is living peacefully in California.

Sue stands out from other female professional bodybuilders for been a great speaker about the bodybuilding lifestyle and for always promoting the benefits of bodybuilding outside of competing. "Bodybuilding has allowed me mold my body into the shape I want, that's why I do it, and will continue to train regardless of whether I compete or not. Bodybuilding makes me feel good about myself, and that's what's important" (Brainum, 226). Gafner's only IFBB Pro, and most notable victory was the IFBB 1991 Jan Tana Classic.

[edit] Bodybuilding philosophyGafner's training mainly consisted of a combination compound, and isolation exercises (mostly done with free weights and a small amount of machines and cables). She trained with the traditional push and pull routine (three days on, one day off) and when contest preparations started, she switched to a four days on / one day off routine to focus more on different body parts. Gafner focuses on her chest, shoulders, back, and arms in order to bring up her upper body to match her strong legs (Brainum, 224). She rarely does Regular Squats with a free barbells due to a hip problem and focuses more on isolation exercises such as Hack Squats, Leg Presses, and Lunges (Brainum, 224). Sue believes that proper form is very important and often avoids extreme heavy weights. During the off-season she avoided any form of aerobic exercise to preserve her energy levels. When it came to contest season she would do at least one or two cardio sessions for four to five days due to her high metabolism.

Oksana Grishina

I am from Kaliningrad, Russia. As a child, my family moved often because my father was an officer in the military. When my father was put on assignment in Riga, Latvia, my mother decided she wanted to put me in gymnastics as a way to direct my energy. She took me to a gymnastics school in Riga. The Art Gymnastics class was not in session, but my mother liked the beauty of the Rhythmic Gymnastics class she saw at the school. At age 7 I was a late starter for gymnastics, but the coach saw potential in me and I was accepted into the rhythmic gymnastics class. After a few months of training, I placed 3rd in my first competition.

After three years, my father was reassigned to a new post in Russia. This job came with a guarantee of government housing, which meant that, finally, we would be in a settled place. Sadly, there was no gymnastics school in this city. My coach in Riga offered me the chance to stay there and continue my training. My parents asked me what I wanted to do, thinking that I surely wanted to move with them. But I was willing to stay in Riga and continue with my gymnastics. They were surprised, but understood my desire and passion for gymnastics. My father switched assignments with another officer so that we could move to Kaliningrad, Russia, a city that did have a gymnastics school. This was a huge sacrifice for my family, because the government would not provide housing for us. I was able to pursue my gymnastics in Kaliningrad, but we changed apartments often and I moved from school to school. I spent countless hours commuting back and forth on foot and by bus between home, school and gymnastics, and I rarely saw my parents.

Fitness was my life. I went to University in Kaliningrad and in 2000 earned a degree as a specialist in Physical Training and Sports. During my university years and for several years later, I organized my own ballet, “Antares”. I also worked as a choreographer with children at the Tchaikovsky School of Music and Art in Kaliningrad.

Sherry Jensen

I am a mother of four and a lifetime natural IFBB Pro fitness athlete, born in Victoria, BC. I lived in Richmond, BC up until 1982 and then I moved to Pender Harbour, BC (Sunshine Coast) This is where I was first introduced to aerobics classes. At the age of 15, I would attend a fitness class once a week at the local community hall which was put on by my very first mentor, Mokie Barabash-Burnham. I really looked up to her because she was fit, positive and a mother in great shape. She became very inspirational to me, so after graduating from Pender Harbour Secondary in 1986, I moved to the Lower Mainland and joined a local gym Fitness World, which is where I am now employed and sponsored. I continued to participate as a member while I completed my degree in Cosmetology. In 1994, just two years after I became a CIABC certified cosmetologist, I studied and practiced to become a BCRPA certified aerobics and weight training instructor. In 2004, I then added to my list of certifications by becoming a BCRPA Certified Personal Trainer for Steve Nash Fitness World. My most recent accomplishment is becoming a Dotfit coach.

I am currently in the process of writing a book about my entire life called "Start Today, Tomorrow Never Comes". This book is going to be dedicated to my children and the people who believed in me. However, don't hold your breath for the book to be released anytime soon, as I have had a very interesting life thus far and there is so much more to add to it. I can assure you that it will inspire and motivate anyone that reads it and that it will be worth the wait!

Before I continue I want to get my alias' out of the way. I started out as Sherry Mauch, then adopted as Sherry Stephens, married into Campbell, Boudreau and now and forever to stay as Sherry Ann Jensen. Again, it will all be in the book. Stay tuned.

Ok now that it's out of the way, I decided to start competing after my second child and after each category I experienced, my fitness friends would introduce me to another. I love the challenge and work involved in maintaining a healthy, fit and positive lifestyle.

It was in 2002, when I was inspired to compete by my friend, now IFBB Fitness Pro, Sandra Wickham. I joined Sandra's dance team, Lean Motion which was the opening entertainment for local bodybuilding and fitness shows. I really enjoyed the fitness aspect of it and the adrenaline rush that over came me at each performance so I decided to compete. I began my training by hiring trainer and Figure Diva, Lara Tamereski. I also became close to another fitness and figure competitor named Sandy Vu. Both Sandy and Lara were excellent motivaters who clearly knew their stuff , as it lead me to a WNBF Pro card in both fitness and figure. After gaining my Pro status and competing at the 2002 Ms Exercise World in New York City, I walked away with 1st place in both fitness and figure and I was hooked. This is what lead me to the meeting of a very popular WNBF Pro bodybuilder, Dave Goodin aka Texas Shredder. He invited me down to down to Austin, Texas to train and shadow him while he trained others. Dave Goodin and I have become great friends and he is now one of my biggest mentors in this industry. He has won many titles and is also the promoter of the INBF Texas Shredder Classic. Dave educated me well and when I returned back to Canada in

In July 2003, I was able to share my experience and knowledge with Fitness World members and staff and move up to the next level of my career, BCRPA certified personal trainer.

In 2005, after competing at the NPC Emerald Cup, I learned of another awesome trainer, Mike Davies. After seeing and admiring his very conditioned clients, I knew I had to contact him and see if he could take me on as well. Fortunately he was able to take me as a new client, and I had the opportunity of attending my first camp in March 2006 in Columbus, Ohio. I was to see what great shape his clients were in, not to mention how absolutely friendly everyone was. My butt kicked into gear and I am being taught how to "Train like a girl" as Mike would say, and to make healthy choices to attain a fit and balanced physique, on and off season.

Zhanna Rotar

Zhanna was born on August 2, 1980 in a small city by the name of Chernivtsi in Ukraine. As a child, she was a straight-A student and very dedicated to her school work, but Zhanna was also an extremely active child. She needed a physical outlet, even at an early age, so she involved herself in every activity available to her. From the age of 2 until I was 7, Zhanna was heavily involved in gymnastics.

When she was 7, Zhanna attended a music school to learn to play the piano. Then, by the age of 8, she was also enrolled in dance school.

When Zhanna was 11, she focused her energy on dance school and her studies. In the morning, she would go to school, then at 3 p.m., she would run to dance practice, which often lasted well over 4 hours every day. Zhanna believe's that dance school is where she developed her strong will and tremendous work ethic.

At 16, Zhanna immigrated to the U.S. with her family and attended Inglemoore High School in Seattle, WA. While there, she enrolled in the Running Start Program, skipped her senior year, and went directly to college. She attended Shoreline Community College for three years and received her AA degree. However, all throughout her academic years, she continued to need a physical outlet, so she joined her first gym. At first, Zhanna was taking various classes, but eventually, she began to lift weights. For Zhanna, weight lifting was something she felt she was meant to do. It seemed so natural to her; it also gave her the physical outlet she constantly needed.

At 20, Zhanna was accepted to the University of Washington majoring in Political Science. As she continued with her schooling, though, she still continued to devote a lot of time to her goal of being a fitness competitor.

Initially, Zhanna wanted to compete in Fitness, but while she was training with that goal in mind, the Figure division was established, and feeling that was a better fit for her, Zhanna decided to change her focus toward the Figure Division.

In 2005, Zhanna turned pro at the Team Universe and she's looking forward to having a very successful career as an IFBB figure athlete.

Zhanna's goal for 2006 is to qualify for the Olympia competition and to one day become Miss Figure Olympia... and to leave her mark on this wonderful sport.

Dana Linn Bailey

ABOUT DLB
I grew up a jock. At age 6, I was already on the swim team, waking up and going to practice just like the big kids. Up until high school, I was a 6-sport athlete all year round, playing soccer, basketball, field hockey, softball, running track and also swim team. In high school I continued with my 3 favorite sports, soccer, basketball, and field hockey and excelled in all with many awards.

I was then recruited to play soccer at West Chester University (PA), where I majored in Kinesiology and a minored in Health Science. I was a 4-year varsity letter winner and starting defender for the Golden Rams, where I helped my team to division playoffs and NCAA’s my junior and senior year. I was named defensive player of the year my junior and senior year.

After college soccer ended for me, I had all this extra time on my hands that I never knew existed. For the first time in my life, since age 6, I had no more practices to be at, no more coach’s telling me to run, and worst of all no more games or competition! So my boyfriend at the time (now husband) Rob, said if you ever want to see me, go to the gym. He was working in a restaurant at the time as a sous-chef and obviously worked horrible hours and I never saw him until late at night. So I started tagging along to the gym. I had the basic understanding of lifting from my high school strength/conditioning class and also lifting with the soccer team here and there, but I followed him and did everything he did. We lifted heavy and hard!

After just a couple of months of lifting, I really started noticing some changes to my body and also my strength. My once skinny little arms started getting some shape and my weights kept increasing. It then became an addiction! I was training harder and harder. I wanted to keep seeing changes and keep moving heavier weight. I do not train like a typical girl. I train like a male bodybuilder. One body part a day and always go as hard and as heavy as possible.

My obsession with moving heavy weight then had me entered into my first power lifting competition, which I won. There was only one other girl entered and I don’t even think she got passed 115 lbs on bench. I believe I finished with 190 lbs on bench and I would like to add that is without wearing one of those neoprene shirts (I think that is cheating). This is just a raw press coming from a 120 lbs girl. My current max bench to this date is 205lbs!!!

I continued to train as I did, hard and heavy. A couple of girls at the gym I was training at were getting ready for a figure competition. So I thought I would enter too! They were all on these strict, crazy diets. I have never watched what I ate. I was still in college living off the college diet, ramen noodles and McDonalds. So I got a little advice on nutrition and changed up my diet to a higher protein lower carb diet. I had to waive goodbye to my cheap ramen noodles.

So I entered my first show in May of 2006, which was the NPC Lehigh Valley show. I got 6th place and was told by the judges I was too lean and too cut. I entered the NPC PA championship in Harrisburg a couple weeks later and didn’t diet and ended up and took first in my class and overall. I was then I really kicked up my training even more. I finally had some more competition in my life! I then took try at bodybuilding. I already train like one, so I figure what the heck I will just enter for fun! Not really expecting to win anything, I entered the NPC Mountain Valley Championship in Nov of 2006 for lightweight bodybuilding, and once again, unexpectedly I took the overall. I enjoy competing in bodybuilding because I love going through the mandatory poses and I like making a routine to dance to. Even though I like competing in body building, I feel aI am a little better suited for figure because it is more femine and I’m not looking to get any bigger than I already am. I then competed at NPC Pittsburgh Championship in 2007, where I got 6th place. I took some time off till 2008 and was introduced to a different affiliate, NABBA, which has different rules for figure. NABBA figure is like bodybuilding in heals. You have mandatory poses and also a routine, which gives you more stage time. I entered couple shows in 2008 taking first and overall at the NABBA Eastern USA and also 2nd in NABBA Ms. Figure America. My most recent shows that I have done, since my 2 year break from competing, were the 2010 Tracey Greenwood Classic, which I took first in my class and took the overall of the show, and the 2010 Team Universe, which was my first national show where I got 12th out of 40-some girls. I plan on competing in another national show soon, hopefully before the end of the year.

I've started 1990 with 21 years of bodybuilding. Had previously danced rock'n'roll but I'm sure it will become difficult. :-)

My Daddy had even then begun with weight training, because he do for his back musste.Sein job as a truck driver is a one-sided stress and it was good that he has found a real studio in Esslingen. I watched as his chest muscles to grow slowly at the age of 42 years began.

The beer belly went back, he beamed a whole and most gave me his shoulder and his biceps fell. Since I'm still living at home and then there were the most recent editions of the Sports Review on the table.

That was the beginning of the change in my life. These ladies pictured in there I felt just as the beauty ideal. And because the desire was born to look like once the case, at least. Then I moved into its own little apartment and on the way into the business then I'm a very small mini-shield seen by pointing out that there is a gym!

Me that is so violently stung in the eye, that I no longer get out of the idea. Two days later the sign was not there anymore. It was well-placed "illegally". Still, I'm there just once bent and have found this studio but actually, and everything took its course. I got a good trial workout followed by muscle soreness. While training, I always saw this poster of Tonja Knight with the White Rose. That was always my motivation. Day after day I was in the studio was over before I even trained my body to sleep and no longer came from behind. I had become a freak. I was mighty proud visible on my biceps and that one could also see my Lat. Be Still I always dreamed of the images in the show, the sport I ever bought myself, and then naturally the desire arose secretly, but also times to see a picture of me in this newspaper.

Tina Kloepfer-2However, this was for me as far away as the moon. After a change of studio and after six years of diligent training you have probably seen me I am in the sport but a little versed, when I met my current husband Mark asked me to show him how to train it properly.

So I've taken it from him and I'm just not got away from how bodybuilding. And then with a man on the side of the same sport and makes the same freak, and the necessary support was there and the Gestichel in the studio: "make some games with" echoed in my head. Even the pregnancy I could hardly keep from training. Well then I've just done heavy squats. And by and large simply listened to my body. And who has allowed me a lot. I've been training to six weeks before birth. And to train eight weeks after birth started again.

Three years later my dream came true! I had prepared myself for the first time in 1999 and I had the feeling that one has on the stage when the audience applauded so blown away that I wanted to experience again in any case. Sun I attended this season at the Baden-Wuerttemberg, the Süddeutsche, the Bavarian and the German championship. And then came pictures of them in the sport but revue was actually a dream come true. After this championship was a powerful Flash-eating, as one can only experience as a bodybuilder. And since I am a woman not to hear the same again. Over time, however, has yet again set a normal appetite and I could then also in the mirror again suffer well.

And the fire burned in preparation for another me. When I was already so far from her head that I was ready for my next diet has just ignited my appendix and I was in the hospital Schwuppdiwupp. Then I could not train after the operation, of course, about six weeks. However, this break has done me well not really. I had a huge trailer and did not want to just start to train. Thus, the break up almost extended to ten weeks and a preparation for the fire was actually as good as out. Finally I'm back to the iron went without a goal. But time brought finally the original Tina reappear and then when I announced in the spring of 2004 that I will return to the stage the fire has to be beaten so badly that it has carried away my husband. So we then have both done for the fall 2004 diet.

Here we Tamer Galal has supported and prepared with all the bells and whistles. Since then, we rely on its products and supplements at a fair price in the Body Planet in Ludwigsburg. Once you learn Tamer know me, know which setting you put behind that person, and that he certainly does not sell garbage. He would never take an athlete across the table just because he also knows how important but also hard to be both a pre-contest.

In preparing for a competition, our daughter has a lot of time assigned to us. For we are not only both competed in our classes but also as a couple. Unfortunately, some of the Paarposing associations is treated more like a stepchild. So, we have yet used any opportunity yet to experience this joint appearance. Unfortunately, although we have had the qualified individually as well as a couple for the German Championship, the ticket cost go there, and then we could start there is no longer imposed by a lock. Myself, the cast really nice on the floor. I would never again make one of these very hard long grueling diets. But something like this happens again. A mate of mine has a half years later, a body of given calendar All Stars. And the same happens to me is how years earlier with the sports revue. I've seen a picture and I could not get out of your head. I just had to get a picture of me.

I have tried to contact the photographer to take and then I come by recommendation from Dr. Martina Herget to an equally brilliant photographer. The Vikings! After a telephone conversation with him I am right back with Tamer Galal put together because there was another diet are essential. Even if you have something already gone through one or two times is so important simply an independent consultant and we already had good experiences with Tamer Galal made. So yes this can work only. In the course of the diet was then quite easy for me and the form so well that I could still Tamer talking about for a stage appearance. I then participated in the Baden-Württemberg and the German championship. And I think there I had the best shape of my life.

From the photo shoot so many beautiful pictures were taken, the photographer has sent me some pictures, including reporting on the sports revue. And in March 2006 I could not believe my eyes. In the sports pages were filled with six Revue my pictures. WOW! Next my stage gear went right in the spring of 2006. I had remembered it was the last diet with Tamer Galal and simple.

However, since I had myself a little misjudged, because it was difficult for me yet so powerful in quick succession to start. But you can only learn from mistakes. Although I had gained but just read the form to be desired. As my path continues can imagine what everyone wants. After all this experience I will just do it again do better than attend the fire at a championship to get the applause for the free program is shown simply indescribable. And I want it back.

That's why I say here at the end: many thanks for everything dear Tamer, for the many times have you and me are on their way into the diet. Also you are not irrelevant to blame the fire in me not just posed.

THANK YOU!

Tina Kloepfer

I became serious about weightlifting during my high school years, and I haven’t stopped since, learning everything I could and always looking to improve my weightlifting and cardio routines thus enhancing my overall fitness and health.

In a world of fakes....Dare to be real!

Im polish and Filipino and grew up in Lakeland, FL. I have a huge family, three beautiful sisters, a very tall lil brother and amazing parents. Growing up, I can def say i was not at all athletic. I did not play sports or really do any kind of fitness activity. I was sorta tall and lanky. I started out doing some small modeling-print work when i was fifteen. Being so tall for my age i then went on to runway. About two years ago, my opinion on the body started to change. I found muscle to be much more pleasing than skin over bones! so i started working out, not really knowing what i was doin....After alot of research and learning i started to put some muscle on pretty fast. I decided to push myself a bit harder and enter a local fitness competition in tx. After my first comp, the rest is history! i was hooked. Its very hard work and mentally challenging, but i enjoy it. The results in the end is worth it! Why I Love It: Working out had for sure changed my views on what a body should look like, a well defined body with muscle def looks better than a skinny body with skin covering bone!! I love watching my body transform month after month!!I love every moment that I get to step on stage. That is def where I belong. I love challenging myself and with figure, you can always improve and kick it up to the next level. Im obsessed with three things…..Teeth and nutrition and BJJ. I love to cook….i love to eat…..and then eat some more. :) ok i really ♥ Brazilian JuiJitsu!! My friend who teaches bjj kept trying to get me to go to a class. One day I actually show up and i was really surprised how much i enjoyed it.He kept telling me i should continue my training bc i would do well. So i did and then somehow i found myself competing in NAGA (bjj tournament )after only a few weeks of training! It was the most thrilling and fun experience ive ever had. I ended up winning beginners 1st place winner w gi and taking 2nd in no gi! I am def hooked on this sport and will continue to train and one day get a black belt! oooosssss!! I love GOD, without him nothing else matters. I am the person I am today because of him. A few of my Favorites quotes: "worry ends where faith begins..........." “A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult” So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed." Proverbs 16:3 “I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)”

A bit about me:

I used to fiddle around with the weights, I was a cardio girl. Never crossing the line from cardio to weights, I felt intimidated. Eventually I incorporated some weight training.

In 2001 I peeked into a Gold’s gym and convinced myself to join. It was there I met my boyfriend at the time, who was 6 weeks out from a bodybuilding show. He saw my potential and 6 weeks later I did my first bodybuilding show. I was 115 Ibs and but competed at 129 Ibs ripped and shredded. I placed 2nd behind Debbie Bramwell…not bad for my first show. 5 weeks later I competed again and placed 1st middleweight and overall winner. At this point I was hooked !
As for my inspirations Corey Everson, Rachel McLish, Debbie Bramwell and Monica Brant. The reason being is that they combined muscle and femininity.

Now I do fitness modeling, but would never rule out stepping on the stage once again, and forever will train like a bodybuilder.
